Postgraduate study

The Department of Italian Studies at Birmingham is a large and long-established Department, with world-class research.

  • One of the biggest, and most vibrant, postgraduate communities in the UK for Italian Studies.
  • Supervision and teaching by international scholars with wide-ranging expertise, especially in cultural, political, cinema, and literary studies.
  • Home to the innovative and highly successful MA in Italian Studies: Culture and Communication taught jointly with the University of Warwick.
  • The serious support of postgraduate researchers by the Department and University:
    • PhD progress vivas each year to prepare for the final viva.
    • A yearly pg symposium with the University of Warwick where pg researchers present their work and get essential feedback.
    • TNA meetings to discuss training needs and give advice on career progression.
    • Regular School pg forums (currently organised by members of this Department)
    • Individual advice on making funding applications

Funding news

The funding competition for 2010-11 is now open. The closing date is 26 February 2010. The following are available for next year: 

  • One AHRC full award for PhD (doctoral) study in Italian.
  • One AHRC full award for Masters study in European culture.
  • 12 full PhD awards from the College of Arts and Law for PhD study in this College.
  • A number of full or fees-only awards available at Masters level from the School of Languages Cultures Art History and Music.
  • 3 fees only scholarships available for the MA in Translation: European Languages and Cultures programme.

There is only one application form - tick the box on the application form to say which competition you are entering. The deadline for funding in 2010-2011 is 26 February 2010 and you should contact the Italian Studies Department (Clodagh Brook) well in advance for advice on making the application.  

We have also received information about the small scholarship programme offered by Il Circolo Italian Cultural Association. Details of the charity and the criteria for scholarship application can be found on their website.  In 2008 Il Circolo disbursed £12,000 in awards to students and the aim is to increase this amount in 2009.

College of Arts and Law Graduate School

All our postgraduates become members of the College of Arts and Law Graduate School. The College of Arts and Law Graduate School website helps prospective students can find out more about funding opportunities and postgraduate life.
